Quite the opposite. One needs only a mere thirty or so pages to learn how to read using phonics, while whole language method needs books and books and books, because each word is a hieroglyph.
You saying that WL and BL provide “the right amount” of phonics means in plain English that after one learns how to read he can read anything, even a WL or BL reader.
In short, phonics works for everyone, in short time, with predictable results. WL works for some who is capable to memorize hieroglyphs and then to build mental map of letters to sounds, which phonics provides directly.
